After the war with the Titans, Zeus divided the world between himself and his brothers Poseidon and Hades. Zeus ruled the sky and the living; Hades ruled the underworld, and Poseidon ruled the Seas.Poseidon has a trident made for him by the Cyclopes with which he stirs up the waves and also commands the winds. He had a terrible temper and could also create earthquakes with the trident, and so was given the title of "Earthshaker". He was also a male spirit of fertility, who sent inland waters and springs. When Demeter was searching for her daughter Persephone, he pursued her amorously. Demeter changed herself to a mare to avoid him, but he changed to a stallion and mated with her anyway. The result was the divine horse Arion. He also mated with the gorgon Medusa nad fathered Pegasus. Athena and Poseidon had a contest for posession of Athens and Attica. Each created a gift: Athena created an olive tree; Poseidon a salt spring. Athena was considered to have created the better gift by the Olympian Gods, and so was awarded the lands, hence the naming of Athens after her. Poseidon was was still honoured in the region however, as befitted a seafaring culture. |
