The Moirae (also known as the fates) were the daughters of Zeus and Themis: Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos.Clotho the spinner would spin out the thread of a person's life. Lachesis the apportioner measures the thread and Atrophos the inflexible cuts it off and brings an end to life. It was said that one's fate was determined at the moment of birth. Sometimes the fates could be influenced but usually the course of destiny that they spun was irrevocable. Even the Gods had to concede to them in the matter of fate. |
