Iris is the daughter of Thaumas (son of Pontus and Ge) and the Oceanid Electra, and sister to the Harpies. As such, she is often pictured with wings, and personifies the rainbow. She was married to Zephyrus, a wind god.On Olympus Iris was the messenger of the gods, particularly Hera and Zeus. She was also know as one of Hera's handmaidens. If Zeus had a command to be given to another Immortal, Iris would deliver it; if he wished to make his will known to humanity, Iris would descend to the earth where she would either appear in borrowed mortal shape or divine form. In this divine form she wore a long, full tunic, her hair encircled by bandeau, and in her right hand a caduceus. She would also appear either winged, or with winged sandals like Hermes (whom also had divine messenger duties). She could travel on air and through water with equal ease, and was able to visit and return from the underworld with impunity. As well as waiting on Hera, Iris also served other gods. Iris would feed and water the their steeds when they returned to Olympus, and on occasion rescued Immortals and humans in distress. Iris is a goddess of the rainbow, messages, emotions and travel. Her symbol os the rainbow.
Prayer to Iris:Iris, messenger of the Gods and goddess of the Rainbow and of emotions, hear my prayer. I am a daughter of two rainbows: one queer, one magical; both of community.Make my emotions true and pure, allowing me to cope with all that comes before me. Shine that spectrum upon me, allowing full reign of possibility. Ensure that all my communications are clear and effective, as I join with others in wheel of time and place. Bless my travels so that I will be enlightened and entertained as I should by them. Give my spirit wings to fly! |
