Hestia is the first born child of Chronus and Rhea (Cybele), and thus the oldest of the Olympians. She is therefore elder sister to Demeter, and though a mother figure, she retains her dignity, remaining an eternal virgin. In Rome she was known as Vesta, and her most select followers were the `vestal virgins'.Hestia rejected the advances of both Apollo and Poseidon, and vowed to remain a virgin. Thus, Hestia is a goddess of chastity, and also a goddess of the hearth and its sacred fire, presiding over domestic affairs and harmony. Hestia's symbol is the eternal flame.
Prayer to HestiaGoddess of the hearth, of home life and family, sister of Demeter.
Allow that my gardens will be nourished and prosperous, and that my endeavours at home be successful and fulfilling. |
