Cybele (Rhea)

[Myth]

------------------------------------------------------------

Cybele personifies the earth in its primitive and savage state. She originates from Phrygia. Later she became associated with the Titaness Rhea and the two figures were merged by the Romans.

As Rhea (Earth), Cybele was wife to her brother Chronos (Sky), and from him gave birth to Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus -- hence her Roman title of Magna Mater or "Great Mother".

Cybele is also associated with Attis, her son and lover who killed himself and was later resurrected (see the page on Attis). Cybele also united with Gordius, king of Phrygia. It was he who devised the famous gordian knot. The son from this union was King Midas.

Cybele's realm is in nature, relationships, boons and retribution. Her symbol is a key. She is often pictured sitting on a throne flanked by lions and leopards, and is the basis for the Strength tarot card. In greece her followers were called Corybantes and later in rome her most widely known followers were the transgendered gallae.

Prayer to Cybele

Great Goddess of women, protectress from one's enemies, healer of grave illness, guardian of the dead, and mistress of prophecy and the future.

Aid me in my quest of spiritual fulfillment, and like Attis (who was your son and was resurrected as your daughter), transform me as adopted daughter and gallae to fulfill myself as I know myself to be -- whole and woman. Grant me safe passage in my physical transition, as directed from within or without.

Grant me leave to discern and discover the future, for myself and for others in constructive ways.
