The 56K dialup connections previously offered by APANA (including Hunter APANA) are no longer available to new members as this service is due to be cancelled no later than 31/12/2011. However, Hunter APANA will continue to provide a 33.6K dialup service (suitable for mail only members or patient web-browsers) for as long as we have one reliable modem in stock to use to receive such a connection.

July 07, 2011

The last of the original dialup lines (4954 8168) was cancelled yesterday since Hunter APANA no longer has any members who use that service. However, the former fax line (4954 7879) has been converted into a dialup line in case any member or future member requires a dialup connection direct to our network on a short-term or permanent basis.

Our connection with Internode has been upgraded to ADSL 2+. The original Billion ADSL modem/router has been retired and replaced with a new Billion ADSL 2+ modem/router. The last connection dropout was 31 days ago and the network has been running smoothly since the new modem was connected to the network.

November 08, 2005

A number of power outages this morning due to the heavy rain caused problems with the network. While most machines rebooted after the power disruptions, Bombadil didn't and remained down until I manually restarted it late morning.

At 3am this morning, Chris detected an attempt to login and compromise our network by an overseas hacker. Chris was able to foil the attempt but since then the network has been down so that not only could he upgrade the security on all machines but also so that the previously planned upgrade of Bombadil, Cray and Kildall could be carried out. The network was fully restored at 1pm, however further attempts (unsuccessful) to gain access to our network have since been detected. We do not know yet if the passwords file has been compromised but if anyone would like to change their password (in case it has) then please phone me and I can make those changes for you. Since most of the network has now undergone major upgrades, there may be a few problems until the 'bugs' caused by the upgrades are 'squashed'. If you encounter any problems then please either email admin@hunter.apana.org.au about them or ring me (Carolyn).
