      Motion Carried.

  6. Business arising from previous minutes:

  7. Regional Report:

      Financial Status

Current balance: $433. All bills have been paid. Finances are expected to improve in the following months, as fees are due.

      Equipment status and function

The machines are up and running after a number of recent problems including water damage. The planned shutdown for Sunday was hastened by the previous night's downpour.

Prior to shutdown, the uptime for some of the machines Niggle and Giles was 207 days. Niggle uses a 486 CPU, Giles a Pentium.

Email bombing hit in a major way, with over 800MB of junk mail caused by the Swen worm. Admin Chris put in place measures to stop it and now Swen causes a relative trickle of junk. Majordomo address was hit with an average 1 per minute at the peak of the Swen crisis.

Line dropouts were reported by Kelly Bottrell, Laura Seabrook, Ven Thai, Lake Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre. The LMNC's issue was fixed when a modem was rebooted.

Webmaster Peter requested that reports be handed to him ASAP for inclusion on the website, and that a number of technical issues had slowed implementation of a new web-based email system.

OH&S officer Laura indicated that an inspection would occur after the meeting.

Motion that the reports be received by Ross Slade.
      Seconded by Helen Donaldson.
      Motion Carried.

  8. System Administrator's Report

Water damage the previous night when rainwater seeped in and fell into Bombadil. The PSU failed as a result. Chris and Carolyn spent most of that night cleaning up, drying the machines and cleaning the mud (water plus dust).

Cray's PSU had to be replaced due to water damage.

That night, time was also taken to rewire the network to meet OH&S expectations.

As a result of the shutdown it was discovered that Bombadil, Cray and Kildall all had CMOS memory issues caused by failing batteries.

Cyclades was reconfigured, and an unused hub "removed".

Ven Thai's machine was found to be infected with an MS Blaster variant. The Admin team removed it from her system.

  9. Business arising from reports

Regarding the new web email software. Admin Chris said that there were compilation problems for "Open Webmail", and MySQL was not yet installed.

Another email utility, Spam Assassin, is currently being trialed, and any member wishing to try this popular anti-spam system should send an email to

  10. General Business

Fees to remain as they are at present.

Andrew asked about the situation with the Lake Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre. Carolyn said that there was no progress on acquisition of ex-Government computers. However, the centre had been handling out APANA flyers to prospective members.
